San Joaquin County Superior Court Linda L. Lofthus - Presiding Judge for 2018 and 2019

Xapuri B. Villapuda - Assistant Presiding Judge

Judge Linda L. Lofthus is the new Presiding Judge of the San Joaquin County Superior Court. Her two-year term commenced January 1, 2018 and will continue through December 31, 2019. She previously served as the Assistant Presiding Judge and the Supervising Civil Judge in 2016 and 2017. Judge Lofthus replaces outgoing Presiding Judge José L. Alva.

Judge Lofthus was appointed to the San Joaquin Superior Court by Governor Gray Davis in October of 2003. During her fourteen year tenure on the bench, Judge Lofthus has been assigned to both criminal and civil jury departments.

Judge Lofthus began her legal career as a deputy public defender.  Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Lofthus was a certified specialist in family law. In addition to practicing family law, Judge Lofthus also handled general civil, personal injury, and business cases, real estate transactions, banking matters and criminal defense. Judge Lofthus earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the New College of California School of Law and her undergraduate degree from the California State University at Chico.

Judge Xapuri B. Villapudua is the Superior Court’s Assistant Presiding Judge. Her two-year term commenced January 1, 2018 and will continue through December 31, 2019.

Judge Villapudua was appointed to the San Joaquin Superior Court by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in June of 2007. During her ten year tenure on the bench, Judge Villapudua has been assigned to criminal and family law departments.

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Villapudua had been a deputy district attorney for the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office since 1995. While serving as a deputy district attorney, Judge Villapudua supervised the attorneys in the Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit. Judge Villapudua earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law and an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Presiding Judge, with the assistance of the Court Executive Officer, is responsible for leading the court, establishing policies, and allocating resources in a manner that promotes equal access to justice, maximizes the use of judicial and other resources, increases efficiency in court operations, and enhances service to the public.
