Stockton Emergency Food Bank Names Rick Brewer As New CEO

The Board of Directors of the Stockton/San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank (EFB) has named longtime Stockton resident Rick Brewer as its new Chief Executive Officer. He begins immediately after an extensive search. Brewer comes to the EFB with years of experience in journalism, corporate communications and marketing. He succeeds Mike Donaghy as the new CEO.

"We chose Rick based on his years of experience in communications, civic engagement and ideas on how to increase the Emergency Food Bank's impact in Stockton and San Joaquin County," said Brian Heck, EFB’s board president. "We're excited to have him join us."

Brewer is a Lincoln High and San Joaquin Delta College graduate, and spent more than 20 years as a reporter at four televisions stations and The Record of San Joaquin County, where he covered sports, city government, crime and religion. Brewer also served as Community Relations Officer for both Stockton Unified School District and Sacramento City College. At Stockton Unified, he was responsible for all marketing and communications on Measure Q, the $465 million school construction/renovation bond campaign passed by voters in 2008. At Sacramento City College he co-chaired the institution’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2016. In addition, Brewer has taught written and oral communications courses at University of Phoenix. He holds degrees from San Francisco State and Gonzaga universities.

"I’m very excited to begin this part of my career, the part of giving back to the community that has given me so much," Brewer said. "I hope to build on the Food Bank’s long track record of success of providing good, quality food to the working poor of our city and county."

Brewer succeeds Donaghy, the popular Food Bank Executive Director that implemented many new programs at the EFB and made a huge impact.

"We knew that finding someone to follow in Mike’s footsteps would be difficult, but we had many qualified candidates show their interest in the position,” Heck said. “We were fortunate to be able to choose from such a high quality pool."

The Stockton/San Joaquin Emergency Food Bank just celebrated its 50th anniversary of providing healthy food to men, women and families with food insecurity. In 2017, the EFB distributed 3.2 million pounds of food to 78,000 people in San Joaquin County through its main pantry at 7 W. Scotts Ave., and 62 other sites through its Mobile Farmers Markets. Eligible residents must have an address within the county, and are able to utilize EFB services twice in any 30-day period.

Donations are accepted at the main pantry, 7 W. Scotts Ave., by phone at (209) 464-7369, or on the organization’s website at www.stocktonfoodbank.org
