Children’s Home of Stockton Announces reorganization in response to CA Continuum of Care

CHS only Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program in San Joaquin County

After months of careful due diligence and in response to California’s Child Welfare Reform, the Board of Directors of Children’s Home of Stockton (CHS) made the decision to restructure and will no longer operate the Non-Public School (NPS). The final day of instruction is May 31, 2019 and we will not operate a summer session. This difficult decision comes on the heels of Children’s Home of Stockton becoming a licensed Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP) in San Joaquin County.

CHS remains the only licensed STRTP in San Joaquin County for a high-risk, high-need population. CHS will continue our valued partnership with San Joaquin County Office of Education and operate two one.Vision classrooms to provide education on our campus to our residential students.

“Children’s Home of Stockton is evolving and responding to California’s Child Welfare Reform.  Our dedicated staff remains committed to our mission of giving at risk-youth an opportunity for a productive life through treatment and intensified specialty mental health services. This restructure does not impact the residential youth in our care and in fact, affords us the opportunity to expand our residential capacity and other critical services,” said Joelle Gomez, CEO at Children’s Home.

Children’s Home of Stockton Non-Public School has been in operation since 1979 providing specialized education to a day population of students.  Children’s Home of Stockton is grateful for the longtime partnerships with Stockton Unified School District, San Joaquin County Office of Education, Lodi Unified School District and all school districts in San Joaquin County who helped to make our NPS a positive school experience in a comprehensive educational environment.

CHS became San Joaquin County’s first and only STRTP in August 2018 and received Mental Health Approval in January 2019.  As a STRTP, CHS is licensed as the highest level of care for youth with acute trauma, extreme behavioral issues, and violent histories. Moving forward and with a priority to serve San Joaquin County youth, Children’s Home of Stockton is dedicated to growing with the ever-evolving needs of today’s youth including the increase in demand for crisis intervention services, transition/aftercare, Specialty Mental Health Services, and trauma informed care for minors who are victims of sex trafficking.

San Joaquin County Office of Education will continue to operate two one.Vision classrooms to provide educational instruction at our NPS building for our residential students.  Future plans include increased mental health services, residential services and wraparound services to better serve our youth.

For more than 137 years, Children’s Home of Stockton has been committed to enhancing the quality of life and well-being for the children, youth and families it serves.
