Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) awarded $2,7 million to SJMC and $450,000 to SJ General Hospital to support their local Residency programs at a special ceremony held by San Joaquin Medical Society. These programs train doctors in several disciplines to benefit the local communities.

At a recent meeting of my staff, the topic of diabetes came up. When we went around the table, it turned out that 25 percent of them have problems with blood sugar. That figure exactly matches the percentage of Americans 65 years old and older who have diabetes or a condition called pre-diabetes.
San Joaquin County Public Health Officer, Dr. Alvaro Garza, confirmed that a 70 year old male living in Manteca is the first human with West Nile Virus (WNV) infection in San Joaquin County this year. So far this year, at least four other counties have reported four other cases of WNV in humans.
The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors will present Julie Vaishampayan, MD, MPH, with a special Board recognition for her recent work in promoting TB elimination in California. Dr. Vaishampayan was also named by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a 2017 Tuberculosis (TB) Elimination Champion. She currently serves as the TB Controller and Assistant Health Officer for San Joaquin County Public Health Services.
