(L-R) Assistant Coach Alexia Poon, Head Coach Adrienne Sorenson

Delta College women’s soccer coach Adrienne Sorenson was named the 2015 California Community College Soccer Coaches Association Northern California Women's Soccer Coach of the Year at Thursday’s (Dec. 3) Soccer Championships Banquet at Deanza College in Cupertino.

“Being honored as Coach of the Year is really a humbling experience,” said Sorenson. “This award means a lot to me because it was voted on by my colleagues. I am so grateful for my team and assistant coach Alexia Poon. We had an amazing journey this year!”

Sorenson is a community college product of Sierra College in Rocklin, where she was team captain and helped lead the team to a Big 8 Conference title in 2005. The Sacramento native transferred to Cal State Stanislaus and played for head coach Gabriel Bolton, where she was a two year starter and lead the team in points her senior campaign. After graduating from Stanislaus with a BA in Kinesiology, Sorenson was hired as Bolton's top assistant and spent the next year under his mentorship.

Sorenson was named Head Coach at San Joaquin Delta College in 2010 at age 22, and was the youngest active collegiate head coach in the country. Sorenson quickly rebuilt Delta’s program to a perennial playoff caliber. The Mustangs have made the playoffs the last five consecutive seasons. In 2012 the program took major steps forward finishing 13-5-4 and 3rd in the Big 8 Conference. The 2015 season was the best season in program history. The Mustangs posted a 15-4-3 record, setting new records for wins in a season (15), consecutive wins (10), unbeaten streak (12 match), shut outs (15), best Big 8 Conference record (8-3-3), highest Big 8 Conference finish (3rd), and goals against (13). The Mustangs will take their success into a new Delta College soccer venue in 2016, expected to be completed by spring.

Sorenson's number one priority is helping her athletes reach their goals both on and off the field. Since 2010, an impressive 93% of Mustangs Soccer sophomores have transferred to 4-year Universities, with many currently on athletic scholarships.

“I want to thank our Athletics management team, Division Dean Steve Graham, Athletic Director Daryl Arroyo, Mary Ann Paz, as well as Superintendent/President Kathy Hart and Assistant Superintendent/Vice President Matt Wetstein for giving me this great opportunity. I am blessed to be able to coach at Delta College and could not be happier!”
