Delta College’s Leo P. Burke Veteran Resource Center Honors "California Women’s Military History Week

Come support our veterans as Delta College recognizes “California Women’s Military History Week” on Thursday, March 21, 10 a.m.  – 12 p.m. at the Leo P. Burke Veteran Resource Center, DeRicco Building, Room 151.

Women have served in the U. S. military with honor and distinction since the earliest days of our country. The first known woman soldier in the United States Armed Forces was Deborah Sampson of Massachusetts who, disguised as a man, served in the Revolutionary War. The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 made women a permanent part of our armed forces.

“Throughout the history of our armed forces, women have been dedicated patriots, willing to put their lives in grave danger to protect our nation and the freedoms of its people,” said Governor Jerry Brown. Governor Brown signed a proclamation on March 11, 2013, proclaiming March 18 – 24 as “Women’s Military History Week.”

Delta College will thank women veteran students, and those who volunteer their services at Delta’s Veteran Resource Center (VRC) on March 21, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Delta’s Veteran Resource Center is staffed by veterans to help veterans. The VRC provides assistance in applying for Veteran Benefits, Financial Aid, Counseling, Admissions and Registration.  The VRC provides computers and study areas in an environment among their peers to help assist the transition from military service to successful student.

“Delta College is honored to recognize the countless skills and efforts women add to our military,” says Delta College Superintendent/President, Kathleen Hart. “Delta’s Veteran Resource Center will allow veterans to meet and access resources that support their educational goals. Whether it’s housing or obtaining veterans benefits, this is the place where veterans will get the support they need to be successful Delta College students.”

Tina Lent, Acting Director of Financial Aid & Veteran Services, is proud that Delta College has once again been recognized as a “2013 Military Friendly School” by Victory Media. "Delta College will continue to make the extra effort to help our veterans achieve their academic and career goals. It's important that those who put their lives on the line for their country know Delta College is their committed partner."
