Delta Trustee Janet Rivera Joins Latino Leaders for NALEO Education Leadership Initiative Task Force

San Joaquin Delta College, Board Vice President, Janet Rivera  joined the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund and more than 30 Latino public officials from across the country to examine strategies for Latino student achievement at the NALEO Education Leadership Initiative (NELI) National Task Force meeting. The two-day event was held in collaboration with the Stanford University Graduate School of Education, March 8 - 9, 2013.

The NELI National Task Force is the only national, bipartisan collective of education leaders from every level of government that works to develop a national, comprehensive education strategy for Latino student success.  Janet Rivera worked alongside Latino public officials to formulate and advocate for college readiness and post-secondary policy strategies at the federal level. The curriculum addressed:

*College and career-ready standards and high-quality assessments valid and reliable for all students; including English learners

- Policies that support the preparation and professional development of educators and administrators
- Policy updates on the Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

“What we gathered from the conference was insightful and very enlightening” stated Janet Rivera  “It was right on point for the needs of Latino students and all students.”

Janet Rivera had the chance to hear from NELI National Task Force speakers including Michael Kirst (President, California State Board of Education), Stanford University professors Dr’s. Guadalupe Valdes, Kenji Hakuta, and various education experts from across the country. The NELI National Task Force will work with federal and state policymakers in order to advance the success of the nation’s Latino students.

The National Task Force is part of the NALEO Education Leadership Initiative (NELI) and is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
