Delta College Superintendent/President Dr. Kathy Hart was presented with the Middle College National Consortium Conference’s first ever President’s Award on Tuesday (Nov. 9) in Newport Beach, CA. Consortium Executive Director Dr. Cecilia Cunningham presented the award in recognition of Dr. Hart’s “commitment and support of Middle College programs.” Also recognized was Delta’s Middle College High School Principal, Sherry Balian.
Middle College High School (MCHS) is a collaborative effort between Lodi Unified School District and San Joaquin Delta College. MCHS first opened it's doors at Delta College in fall 2000. Target enrollment is 240 students in grades nine through twelve.
“This award reflects the hard work and dedication of Middle College High School Principal Sherry Balian, counselors, staff and students,” said Dr. Hart. “Delta College is extremely proud to support the terrific work Middle College programs perform on behalf of student success.”
The mission of Middle College High School is to provide a supportive, academically challenging environment for high ability underachieving youth. The program focuses on youth with circumstances that would hinder their academic performance at a traditional high school. MCHS students are provided with a unique opportunity to earn transferable college credit, and develop skills that will provide motivation and support for lifelong personal, academic and social growth.
Among numerous awards, Delta’s Middle College High School recently won the prestigious 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes “Exemplary high performing schools from elementary through high school.” MCHS was required to perform in the top 15 percent of California schools as measured by state assessments.
MCHS Principal Sherry Balian highlighted "We would not have been named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School without the support of Dr. Hart, and the outstanding instruction Delta College provides our students."
