El Concilio/Council for the Spanish Speaking Awarded $75,000 OAG Grant

El Concilio-Council for the Spanish Speaking recently announced their receipt of the Blueprint to Foreclosure Recovery Grant that was made possible by a grant from the Office of the Attorney General of California, from the National Mortgage Fraud Settlement, to assist California Consumers.

The $75,000 grant will be used in El Concilio’s Financial Literacy program where currently foreclosure Counseling is provided by HUD Certified counselors.  These additional funds will be used in hiring a bilingual Hmong speaking specialist to reach out and provide Financial Literacy workshops and events to the Hmong community.

The Financial Literacy workshops will include teaching The Money Smart instructor-led curriculum to adults and youth that consists of eleven training modules that cover basic financial topics.  An essential part of the new position will be recruiting students and engaging with the community so as to provide various community sectors such as school, community and faith based centers with Financial Literacy Services. The curriculum will be taught in English and/or Hmong language. In addition to the workshops, 3 legal resource fairs will be organized with API Legal Outreach in the community.

The grants are very competitive.  Out of the thousands of agencies that applied for funding only 21 were recipients of the grants.
