Henry Paine to show stunning photographs at Art Expressions of San Joaquin

Art Expressions of San Joaquin photographer Henry Paine to show stunning photographs in an exhibit entitled “Vintage Lace Designs of the Early 20th Century.”

Paine most often creates beauty and striking compositions in landscapes, plants, architecture, industrial settings, the art painted on the sides of railroad cars, as well as statuary found in terra cotta factories.

He also finds close-up abstract and detailed designs where you least expect them, as shown in this upcoming exhibit. The intricate lace designs were photographed with a 4”x5” large-format film camera in the late 1970’s. At that time Paine had access to hundreds of delicate handcrafted lace and cutwork tablecloths that had been carefully washed, starched and placed on stretchers to dry in the sun. This drying process gave him the opportunity to choose specific designs within each tablecloth or sometimes the entire tablecloth was photographed.

It wasn’t until recently that Paine started scanning the 4”x5” film negatives to make digital images that he could print with an Epson printer. The photographs are processed to archival standards, using carbon-based pigment inks and are mounted on acid-free mat board.

The exhibit will be available at the San Joaquin County Administration Building from September 3 through October 11. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday, September 13, from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
