Horton Gallery exhibit seeks social change, racial justice

L.H. Horton Jr. Art Gallery presents “The Space Between History and Hope,” an online exhibition that reflects on Black American history and racial injustice, as well as action for social change.

The exhibition, which opens Thursday, Oct. 8, will be available here. It is co-curated by exhibiting artist Milton 510 Bowens and Horton Gallery Program Coordinator Jan Marlese.

As the nation reacts to the violent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and too many other Black Americans, the prevailing institutional and systemic racism is revealed once again. The ongoing struggle to overcome centuries of oppression in America over Black people calls for action against the embedded social, political, economic, and educational inequities within our society.

As an arts organization, it is within Horton Gallery’s mission to respond to this history and hope for the future through the arts. This is achieved by listening to and providing a platform for Black voices. The Gallery seeks to engage artists to expose structures of oppression and the systemic racism that has infected our culture, while also advocating for measures to transform these racist systems.

The online exhibition presents the work of nine artists working in a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, and collage.

You can meet the artists and learn more at an opening reception on Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. (Link: https://cccconfer.zoom.us/j/92487988936.)

In addition, there will be two artist talks:
