Merryhill School Students and Teachers Celebrate the Joy of Reading with Family Literacy Day

Merryhill Elementary students and preschoolers in Stockton celebrated reading and early childhood literacy in honor of Read Across America Day. Preschoolers came to school dressed in comfy pajamas and listened to elementary students read popular children’s books such as “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” During Literacy Day, Merryhill also held a Scholastic book fair, during which students and their parents were invited to pick out books.

Read Across America Day promotes reading, particularly for children and young adults. In 1997, the National Education Association pushed for a special day to celebrate reading throughout the United States. This idea proved to be a popular one, so it was not long before the first Read Across America Day was held on March 2, 1998. This nationwide observance coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel), an American writer best known for writing whimsical and quirky books including “Green Eggs and Ham,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!,” and “The Cat in the Hat.”
