New EdZoocational Programs at Micke Grove Zoo

On September 3, the Micke Grove Zoo Education Department launched a series of new and exciting education-based programming for pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade classes. Five new zoo field trips and the highly acclaimed Zoo Mobile program have been added to the Education Department’s repertoire of premiere life science learning opportunities for students in San Joaquin County and the communities that surround it.

Some of the newest programs, including Amazing Animals and Zoo Detectives, are designed to give students an in-depth scientific experience that meets current science standards and integrates elements of the upcoming Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Additionally, the Department is continuing its most popular programs, including One, Two - Learn at the Zoo and the Animal Discovery Tour.

The Education Department was also recently awarded a $10,000 grant from General Mills for its Zoo Mobile program, enabling zoo educators to travel with animals and props to schools and senior facilities.

“We are providing memorable learning opportunities that most schools and natural history sites in the area can’t provide,” said Allison Meador, Director of Conservation Education for the Zoo. “Our programs give students an edge in scientific understanding while also connecting them to key messages of wildlife conservation, a primary goal of Micke Grove Zoo.”

Another significant development for the Education Department has been the addition of an online reservation system made available on the “Education and Programs” page of the Zoo’s website, www.mgzoo.com. The online reservation system simplifies a teacher’s ability to sign up for multiple programs and streamlines the information process.

“The online reservation system is essential for allowing us to provide accurate information to interested teachers and activity directors and for making it easier for them to take advantage of the incredible things we are offering their students and clients,” said Meador.

The Micke Grove Zoo Education Department is managed by the Micke Grove Zoological Society, a private non-profit that provides support and services to Micke Grove Zoo. Micke Grove Zoo is open every day of the year except for Christmas from 10am-5pm with last entry allowed at 4:30pm. Zoo admission is $5 for guests 14 and older, $3 for children 3-13, and free for children under the age of 2 and members of the Micke Grove Zoological Society. Please check the website, www.mgzoo.com, for additional details. San Joaquin County parking fees apply. For parking information, visit www.sjparks.com.
