Opening Reception at The Mexican Heritage Center

June Reception-Ruby Chacón

Artist Reception for Ruby Chacón is on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 5:30 -7:30 PM at The Mexican Heritage Center, 111 S Sutter St, Stockton, CA 95202.

Ruby Chacón is a first generation high school and college graduate in her family. This experience has inspired her lifelong work to create a counter narrative for empowerment in place of disenfranchisement.

Chacón is the Co-Founder and Ex officio Board member of the Mestizo institute of Culture and Arts (MICA). She co-founded the non-profit in 2003 and opened the institute in an under represented neighborhood, alongside with Mestizo coffeehouse, in 2008. She worked with Mestizo Arts and Activism, a youth participatory action collective, in partnership with the University of Utah and MICA where diverse high school youth researched social issues and created art projects from their research.

She has created numerous murals working with apprentices through a community engagement process, as well as extensive research to create designs that promote a sense of community and belonging. Chacón's work has taken her all over the world, and has been the subject of many documentaries.

A recent resident of Sacramento, California, she hopes to continue her goals as an artist by bringing her sense of identity, culture and voice. Her work aspires to bridge multigenerational, multicultural, diverse socio economic, professional and educational experiences by claiming public space in order to create a sense of belonging in art. In doing so, she hopes to heal, empower, inspire voice, creativity and action.
