San Joaquin Delta College is launching what officials hope will be a series of modern job fairs at which attendees not only learn about some of the region’s largest employers, but can also interview and apply for jobs that very day.[email protected]
The first “GO LIVE with Top 25” event is scheduled for Thursday, April 5 at 12:30 p.m. in Shima 240. Both students and members of the general community are welcome to attend, but should reserve a spot by calling (209) 954-5151 ext. 6332 or by emailing [email protected]. Provide your name, student identification number (if you are a Delta student), email address and phone number. Space is limited.
O.G. Packing and Cold Storage, which employs over 1,500 people during its peak season, will be the company hiring at the inaugural April 5 event. The company offers jobs ranging from warehouse work to office administration and equipment engineering.
“It’s a great way for someone to make quick money with flexible hours,” said Alicia Stewart, professor of business information management at Delta.
Job fairs have traditionally provided students with information about companies, but not necessarily a chance to interview or apply on the spot, she said. The April 8 event allows job hunters to sit in a classroom, watch a short video about the company, speak with O.G. Packing representatives and immediately apply using classroom computers, with assistance if needed.
That’s a new model that Delta College hopes to carry forward in future job fairs featuring other Top 25 employers in the region.
“We want to let the community know this is what we hope to do in the future,” Stewart said. “We hope to change the way we help the community and our students get jobs.”
