Stockton Appoints Public Works Director

Gordon MacKay, the interim and deputy director of the Public Works Department for the City of Stockton since December, 2001, has been selected as Stockton’s Public Works director, effective January 1, 2013.  Mr. MacKay has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia with an emphasis in water resource and municipal engineering.  He has 30 years of combined experience in infrastructure design and construction, traffic and transportation, and teaching and management experience.

“Gordon has been doing a tremendous job for us managing a division within one of the largest and most visible city departments for over a decade,” said Deputy City Manager Kurt Wilson.  “We conducted a nationwide search and found that we had the best person for the job already working for the City of Stockton.  He is an excellent addition to the City leadership team, and we look forward to working with him in this new role.”

As the deputy director of Public Works since 2001, Mr. MacKay was responsible for all activities of the Department’s Operations and Maintenance Division, including construction of capital projects and maintenance of streets, parks, City buildings, traffic signals and other traffic control devices, street lights, trees, boat launches,  and the City’s fleet of vehicles.  He has served as the interim director since September, 2012, overseeing the entire department, which includes oversight of large roadway, right-of-way and bridge construction projects, traffic engineering and solid waste divisions, in addition to the divisions he managed as deputy director.

Mr. MacKay is looking forward to his newly expanded role.  “I am proud of the past achievements of the Public Works team in delivering vital services that people use every day. I look forward to leading this group of dedicated professionals towards a bright future.”
