Stockton Civic Theatre’s closing show of the 2015-2016 season, the musical play “1776”, has been cast by director Kevin Costello. SCT’s artistic director, Costello once again assumes directorial duties with this Tony Award winning musical scheduled to open on June 15.
“1776” is a musical with style, humanity, wit and passion, with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, and book by Peter Stone. The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in the Tony Award winner for Best Musical, which ran for 1,217 performances following its Broadway premiere.
It’s the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence…if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! “1776” follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the second continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. “1776” is a funny, insightful, and compelling drama with a striking score and legendary book.
Cast in leading roles are Matthew Voyer as John Adams, Michael Stratford as Benjamin Franklin, John Thiel as Thomas Jefferson. A large cast numbering over 20 males, two ladies hold their own with Madeline Kellogg as Abigail Adams, and Lydia Kaye as Martha Jefferson.
Award winning director Costello has directed several shows during his tenure as artistic director, his most recent being this season’s “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”. Assisting him with choreography will be Jennifer Hargreaves, and Jim Coleman as musical director conducting a live orchestra.
