The Subject is Love, an original musical revue, is the kickoff fundraiser to a $350k capital campaign to upgrade the auditorium, lobby, and bathrooms and add much needed performance, rehearsal, and storage space. The building is over 35 years old and is overdue for sprucing up and expansion. SCT hopes that the work done to the building will add to the audience experience and allow the theatre to produce more work and create more opportunities for community members.
The show is a mixture of songs and quotes about love from celebrities and deals with the many facets of love—from longing to heartache, excitement to bitterness and everything in between. It features music ranging from standards like “Makin’ Whoopee” and “The Man That Got Away” to modern musical theatre masterpieces sure to be standards themselves one day. Audiences will enjoy the wry wit and wisdom of songwriting masters like Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim and the soaring melodies of Broadway composers like Jerry Herman and Jason Robert Brown. There is even a little Willie Nelson mixed in for good measure.
The production is Conceived and Directed by SCT Artistic Director Dennis Beasley with Musical Direction by Joshua Landin.
The cast for The Subject is Love includes SCT veterans Melissa Esau (Vanya, Sasha, Sonia, and Spike and Legally Blonde among others), John Thiel (Bert in Mary Poppins, Thomas Jefferson in 1776), Mary Peterson (Sister Act), Nick Giovannoni (Unnecessary Farce and 1776) and Beasley, who also directs.
