Thunder Selected by ECHL to Take Part in Hockey Heritage Weekend

The inaugural event will take place in Anchorage, Alaska on February 7 & 8

The ECHL announced on Thursday that the League will host “Hockey Heritage Weekend” presented by CCM on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 in Anchorage, Alaska when the Alaska Aces host the Stockton Thunder.

Both the Aces and Thunder will wear unique jerseys celebrating their affiliations during the two games and the Hockey Heritage Weekend will feature special events and festivities surrounding the weekend contests, including special exhibits highlighting the history of hockey in Alaska and the ECHL. Hockey Heritage Weekend will also include the official induction ceremony for the seventh class of the ECHL Hall of Fame. Additional details on the surrounding events will be announced in the coming months.

“Hockey Heritage Weekend is a unique event for the ECHL,” said Brian McKenna, ECHL Commissioner. “We are pleased to bring this inaugural event to the hockey-rich state of Alaska and the Aces’ fans.

“We are very pleased to be a part of the ECHL’s Hockey Heritage Weekend,” said Sean Williams, VP of Global Marketing at Reebok-CCM Hockey. “The event will offer an entertaining and unique perspective on the game of hockey and its history in Alaska.”

“The Alaska Aces are excited to bring an anticipated and unparalleled event to the state of Alaska,” said Aces managing member Terry Parks. “Hockey Heritage Weekend symbolizes the legacy, honor and prestige of our great game. It will be an amazing opportunity to surround our zealous community with the ECHL Hall of Fame inductions, Stanley Cup and more in our consummate game night experience at Sullivan Arena.”

The Aces are in their 11th season in the ECHL in 2013-14. The club has won the Brabham Cup as ECHL regular-season champion in each of the last three seasons, becoming the first team in the ECHL’s 25-year history to accomplish the feat. Alaska has won two Kelly Cup titles, in 2006 and 2011, while also advancing to the Kelly Cup Finals in 2009. The Aces have sold out all eight games they have hosted in the Kelly Cup Finals, and also have 25 regular-season sellouts since 2003.

The Thunder take on the Utah Grizzlies for a two-game home stand on Friday and Saturday night. The weekend set is also the 8th annual edition of “Thunder Goes Pink”, which will have a silent auction and jersey auction to benefit the St. Joseph’s Foundation – Breast Health Services. Fans can find more information about special “pink” ticket packages on StocktonThunder.com.
