CIVIL RIGHTS, A LIBRARY, AND THE TOUGALOO NINE: LIVING HISTORY FOR TODAY

Before the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the marches in 1965, nine members of the Tougaloo College NAACP Youth Council attempted to use the white-only Jackson Public Library on March 27, 1961. They sat quietly at different tables reading books not available in the "colored" library. When the nine refused to leave, they were arrested for disturbing the peace. They became known as the Tougaloo Nine.

Imagine being one of nine students that changed history.

Students and adults will have a chance to learn more about this crucial event in our nation’s history when the Chavez Library welcomes Geraldine Hollis, author of Back to Mississippi and one of the Tougaloo Nine on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 3:30 pm.

This free program is part of the Live from Cesar Chavez! series sponsored by the Library & Literacy Foundation for San Joaquin County.
